The England men’s cricket team encountered an unanticipated delay on their journey to Lord’s when a group of Just Stop Oil protesters briefly stopped their team bus.
The incident occurred on the first day of their Test match against Ireland, lending some intrigue to the start of their summer red-ball campaign. However, the disruption was resolved quickly, and the match continued without significant delays.
Jonny Bairstow, one of the players, captured the scene and posted it to his Instagram story. The photograph depicted protesters from Just Stop Oil standing in front of their team’s coach, with police officers present at the scene. Bairstow’s caption humorously stated, “If we’re a bit late, it’s not our fault,” emphasising the team’s relaxed attitude towards the circumstance.
While it is unclear whether the demonstrators specifically targeted the England cricket team’s coach, Just Stop Oil posted a brief video of the demonstration on Twitter.
They commented in the caption, “Apparently that’s the @englandcricket team transport. They may be familiar with batting collapses, but the climate crisis is not a one-day international; it is our greatest challenge.” The purpose of the group’s protest appeared to be to highlight the urgency of addressing the climate crisis.
According to a press release issued by Just Stop Oil, the campaign organisation organised a march around Hyde Park and Battersea Park involving approximately 50 participants divided into five groups. At approximately 8:37 a.m., a smaller group of four individuals marched on Kensington Gore, delaying the England cricket team’s voyage temporarily.
However, police quickly intervened, invoking Section 12 of the Public Order Act, and putting an end to the march by 8:43 a.m. By 10:00 am, all teams had left the roadway safely, ensuring minimal disruption.
The Just Stop Oil spokesperson conveyed the organization’s message, emphasising the imminent threat posed by climate catastrophe. They stated, “No one is safe from climate collapse it will destroy all that we hold dear.” We will only be left with embers. The oil and gas industries have had a fine run, but it’s time to declare. The group’s fervent stance on the climate crisis is consistent with their persistent efforts to raise awareness and promote change.
Not for the first time have climate change protesters made their presence known in the sporting world. In a recent incident during the Premiership rugby union final between Saracens and Sale at Twickenham, two individuals wearing T-shirts reading ‘Just Stop Oil‘ invaded the pitch and splattered orange paint power on the grass before being quickly apprehended by security personnel.
Similarly, the World Snooker Championship at the Crucible Theatre was interrupted when a protester jumped on the table and dispersed orange powder during the match between Robert Milkins and Joe Perry.
