Bengaluru (Karnataka), May 19 – The Indian Junior Men’s Hockey Team, brimming with confidence following their remarkable victory at the 10th Sultan of Johor Cup, departed from the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on Friday, setting their sights on the much-anticipated Men’s Junior Asia Cup 2023 in Salalah, Oman.

Placed in Pool A, India will face their arch-rivals Pakistan, along with Japan, Thailand, and Chinese Taipei. While Korea, Malaysia, Oman, Uzbekistan and Bangladesh are in Pool B. The tournament is scheduled to take place from May 23 to June 1, 2023.

Captain Uttam Singh stated, “We have eagerly anticipated this tournament, especially after putting in so much hard work over the past few months. Having had the opportunity to play high-intensity matches against the Senior India team during our camp in SAI Bengaluru, has been beneficial to our preparation.

“He added, “Winning the Sultan of Johor Cup last year has definitely boosted our confidence, and now we are eagerly looking forward to competing against some of the top teams in Asia.


Uttam emphasized the team’s advantage, highlighting the presence of experienced players who bring a wealth of international exposure. “Most of the Indian junior hockey team members have gained a rich international hockey experienced in recent years, even some of the team members are even qualifying to debut for the senior Indian hockey team”.

The Men’s Junior Asia Cup 2023 holds significant importance for all participants, serving as the qualifying event for the upcoming FIH Junior Men’s World Cup 2023 scheduled to be held in Malaysia in December.

While Malaysia qualifies automatically as the host nation, the top three finishers in the Men’s Junior Asia Cup 2023 will secure their spots in the prestigious quadrennial event.

“This tournament is vital for us as it provides an opportunity to qualify for the prestigious FIH Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup which will be held later this year.

With thorough preparations behind us, our goal is to clinch the title and secure qualification,” Uttam expressed.
