The last chord of MacGowan’s music rang out on Thursday ending a long fight with illness that was shown in Clarke’s moving social media posts. After being treated for an illness at Dublin’s St. Vincent’s Hospital not long ago MacGowan was sent home on November 22. While he was in the hospital Clarke kindly kept his fans up to date and thanked them for their “lovely messages and prayers.”

The composer had been having health problems lately and had been stuck in a wheelchair since 2015 when he broke his pelvis.

Last year he was diagnosed with viral encephalitis a condition that can be life-threatening. This added to the problems in an already difficult job.

MacGowan was born in Kent England in 1957 to Irish parents. He spent his summers as a child listening to traditional Irish music in a southern country.

This event opened the doors for his singing career. In 1982 he helped start the band The Pogues in London. They played a unique sound by combining Irish folk tunes with rebellious punk notes.

The Pogues became very popular very quickly by putting out a bunch of hit albums and songs. “Fairytale of New York” their classic Christmas hit from 1988 may be the best song they ever made. It has a touching duet with English singer Kirsty MacColl.

It is sad to say goodbye to Shane MacGowan but his musical journey and cultural effect will live on in the history of Irish folk-punk and in the world of musical storytelling in general.
