According to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, 5 million people signed up for Threads in the first four hours of the service going live, as the company aims to lure users away from Elon Musk’s troubled platform with the promise of longer posts, a handful of celebrity backers, and a strong resemblance to Twitter.

Users of Thread will be required to have an Instagram account. After downloading the app, users have the option of following the same profiles they already follow on Instagram.
Visually, the programme is quite similar to Twitter; however, retweets are now termed “reposts,” and tweets are now called “threads.” Meta has a history of plagiarising its competitors, most notably with the upcoming release of Instagram’s Reels feature in 2020, which is strikingly similar to TikTok’s short-form movies.
Unlike on Twitter, where users are limited to 280 characters per tweet, a Threads post can be up to 500 characters long and can include a video of up to five minutes in length. Each user will have the option to unfollow someone, block, restrict, or report another. Users can also exclude responses containing specific words.
After another tumultuous period at Twitter, during which it put viewing limits on tweets over the weekend, in part because of data collection by companies building artificial intelligence models, Meta has launched Threads.

It is estimated that around 250 million individuals use Twitter, while 2 billion use Instagram.
Meta claimed the app would function similarly to Twitter’s competitors, like the decentralised infrastructure used by Mastodon, which enables the migration of user accounts between other services.
They said in the post, “our team is working towards making Threads easily accessible with all the open, interoperable known social media platforms that we believe can establish the future of the internet for common users.“
Meta announced plans to make Threads compatible with ActivityPub, the underlying technology for Mastodon and other interoperable social networks, allowing users to take their accounts and followers with them to other apps that accept ActivityPub.
Meta claimed that Threads users could cease using the app and move their data to another service like Mastodon, which makes use of the same underlying technology.
To usher in a new era of diverse and interconnected networks, ” Our goal is to make it possible to use Threads without creating an account by using third-party apps.,” the company says. Like Mastodon, Meta plans to allow smaller communities to grow, each with its own set of norms and moderation procedures.
The Guardian has learned that, at least for the remainder of 2018, Meta will not let advertising on Threads. At present, the primary feed features both content shared by users and algorithmically chosen articles. There are no immediate plans to restrict this to followers exclusively.
Instagram handles will be retained, lowering the likelihood of a user snatching a popular handle.
Meta has made the decision to set the privacy settings for all UK Threads users under the age of 18 to “Friends Only,” in response to concerns voiced by politicians and advocacy groups about the safety of youngsters using the site.
Threads was launched at “peak Twitter frustration,” according to Forrester’s research director Mike Proulx, but the market for alternatives to Twitter was already crowded with services like Hive, Bluesky, and Mastodon. Saying that, “this only serves to fracture the Twitter alternative-seeking user base,” he added.
