Model S Plaid

In a remarkable comeback, the Tesla Model S Plaid has reclaimed its title as the fastest production electric car to lap Germany’s Nurburgring race track. The Model S Plaid, equipped with the optional Track Pack, has set a new lap record of seven minutes, 25.231 seconds around the 20.832-kilometer circuit. This time beats the previous record of seven minutes, 33.350 seconds set by the Porsche Taycan Turbo S in August 2022 by an impressive eight seconds.

Model S Plaid’s breathtaking performance

The Tesla Model S Plaid had previously held the lap record in September 2021 with a time of seven minutes, 35.579 seconds. However, it was later overtaken by the Porsche Taycan Turbo S. Now, Tesla has reclaimed the top spot with an even faster time, reaffirming its dominance in the electric vehicle (EV) market.

Second Fastest Four Door Production Car

Not only has the Model S Plaid become the fastest electric car, but it has also secured the second-fastest time for a four-door production car on the Nurburgring track. The current record for a four-door car is held by the Jaguar XE SV Project 8 supercharged V8 sedan, which completed the lap in seven minutes, 23.164 seconds in 2019.

To achieve this remarkable performance, Tesla introduced a new Track Pack for the Model S. Priced at $20,000 in the US and €18,435 in Europe, the Track Pack includes various enhancements such as a higher top-speed limiter of 322 kilometers per hour (200 miles per hour), lighter 20-inch ‘Zero-G’ forged aluminum wheels, and track-oriented Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R tires.

Additionally, the pack features 410mm carbon-silicon brake discs with six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers, as well as improved brake pads and fluid.

This victory marks another milestone in the ongoing rivalry between Tesla and Porsche. Since late 2019, the two manufacturers have been engaged in a back-and-forth battle for lap records at the Nurburgring. Porsche initially claimed the record with a pre-production Taycan Turbo, but it was achieved on a slightly shorter layout of the track and without official verification. Tesla responded by bringing modified Model S prototypes to the Nurburgring, hinting at their intentions to set a new benchmark for electric cars.

History of lap-record competition

Although Tesla didn’t attempt an official lap record initially, the company stated that the Model S Plaid had the potential to achieve a time of 7 minutes and 20 seconds at the Nurburgring. It wasn’t until September 2021 that Tesla officially set a lap record with a time of 7 minutes, 35.579 seconds. However, Porsche reclaimed the title in August 2022 with the Taycan Turbo S, setting the stage for Tesla’s recent triumph.

Future prospects

Looking ahead, Porsche is not resting on its laurels. The German automaker has been testing a high-performance variant of the Taycan, possibly named the Turbo GT, which is expected to deliver up to 1000 metric horsepower (735 kW). With this forthcoming model, Porsche aims to reclaim the record once again, further intensifying the competition in the EV market.
